A PANEL DISCUSSION ON ‘THE CHANGE IN ETHIOPIA & ITS IMPLICATIONS FOR SOMALIA

DAD organized a panel discussion themed ‘The Change in Ethiopia & Its Implications for Somalia’ held at Ramada Old City Hotel in Istanbul on July 17, 2018. The Panelist were young researchers who are interested in the region.

In a fruitful discussion the panelists characterized the underlying causes of the leadership and political change in Ethiopia as Centralized authoritarian government who oppressed most of the Ethiopian population for centuries, Ethnic tensions and unaddressed deeper grievances of major ethnic groups and volatility with political upheavals in the Sub-Saharan region fueled by the latest protests, social media campaigns and diasporic influence.

In their discussion, the panelists highlighted that the change in Ethiopia and the appointment of Dr. Aby Ahmed, an Oromo, as the PM of Ethiopia and his moves can help create an East Africa with states live peaceful with neighbors and integrate economically.

As in the case of Somalia, the government is required to determine its strategic goals in partnering with Ethiopia in the future projects.
