BURUNDI WILL HOST THE NEXT COMESA SUMMIT

Common market for eastern and southern Africa (COMESA) was established in 1994 to replace the former umbrella which was called Preferential Trade Area (PTA) an organization operated from the earlier days of 1981. As  defined by its Treaty COMESA was established ‘as an organization of free independent sovereign states which have agreed to co-operate in developing their natural and human resources for the good of all their people’ and as such it has a wide-ranging series of objectives which necessarily include in its priorities the promotion of peace and security in the region.

With 19 member states and its large population which exceeds 389 million with an impressive and large geographical area of nearly 12 Million (sq. km) the organization could realize   a milestone achievements in terms of Trade, customs union, and social solidarity, such a work will enhance the integration of member states, which will contribute positively to the prosperity and security of the region and rest of the continent.

The leaders (COMESA) will gather in Bujumbura/Burundi for two days submit 18 and 19th April, 2018. They are expected to discuss on several significant issues related to the future of the organization, and the required steps to go forward for further economic and trade interdependence. According to sources from COMESA Somalia and Tunisia are expected to Join COMESA, also the submit shall appoint a new Secretary General to replace the current secretary Mr. Sindiso Ngwenya.
